Bronson Kaufusi Raring To Go

BYU’s never seen an outside linebacker the likes of Bronson Kaufusi. Coming in at 6-7, 265-pounds, Kaufusi brings a rare blend of size and speed to the outside linebacker position. Kaufusi is going to be a major disruptor on the defense with his versatility in 2014 as he spent the last 2 years on the defensive line.

When Bronson Kaufusi finally got on the field in fall camp it was evident what he brings to the defense and how well the defense responds to him. Although it wasn’t a fully padded or full contact scrimmage, his reappearance on the outside as a pass rusher for the first time during fall camp changed things quickly.

“I missed quite a bit of fall camp but I feel good,” Kaufusi said. “I don’t think it will hurt me too much because I already pretty much know the defense. I just need to get back into playing again and everything will be fine.”

During the last observation period of fall camp, Kaufusi’s rushing ability on the edge did a couple of things. One, it stressed the offensive line and forced the pocket to collapse a lot quicker, and, two, that forced the quarterbacks to either move out of their passing lane or get rid of the ball faster than they want to.

“It’s good to be back with the guys and playing with the team again,” Kaufusi said. “I feel good out there and there’s no real issues anymore with me being able to go all out now. I’m just happy to be back playing again.”

Kaufusi’s ability to apply pressure on the edge has a ripple affect down the line since the guard is often shading to help with a double team freeing up a defensive tackle for more one-on-one play.

“Well, I just try and do the best I can and help my teammates when I can,” Kaufusi said. “I don’t try to do too much; I just play within my responsibilities and let things happen. We have some really good players on the defensive line and so they also help me be able to be success in rushing on the edge as well. We all kind of help each other out in that way.”

Kaufusi will have some time to get himself back into the full swing of everything. He’s a player that coaches have to stop working out so he doesn’t get too big, and he’s smart enough to know his role within his defensive responsibilities. By the time the Cougars line up and get set for UConn he’ll be ready to go.

“I can’t wait and it’s going to be a lot of fun,” Kaufusi said. “I’m excited to get out there and get going.”
