The temperatures dipped last weekend, but still some scorching performances. 'Stars of Alabama' for week eight in classes 4A-6A are presented here...
Stars of Alabama:
Andre Johnson
6-3, 205 pounds
Junior defensive lineman
Alabama Christian Academy
Johnson and his teammates earned a 21-13 win over region foe Ashford last week with the junior recording 15 tackles and a sack. Johnson has recorded 15 tackles in each of his last three games.
Alabama Christian (5-3; 4-2) sits atop 4A-region 2 in a three-way tie with Opp (loss) and St. James (win). They will host Bullock County this week in their last region game of the regular season.
Donald Spencer
6-0, 200 pounds
Senior linebacker
Carl Binder
6-2, 200 pounds
Junior defensive end/linebacker
Brian Binder
5-11, 310 pounds
Senior offensive lineman
Mattie T. Blount High School
Binder and Spencer led the defense in the 33-7 win over Baker while Brian took care of protection on the offense.
Spencer had 10 tackles, with four solo, a sack and two tackles for a loss. Binder accounted for seven tackles, three solo, one for a loss, two sacks and a caused fumble.
The elder Binder graded out at 95-percent and had five knockdowns in the win.
Blount (5-2; 4-2) will host Williamson this week in their last region game of the season.
Ken Marbury
5-10, 170 pounds
Senior quarterback
Minor High School
Marbury rushed for 95 yards and completed 11-of-14 pass attemtps for 109 yards while handing Jess Lanier their first loss of the season.
Minor (5-3; 4-2) has been forced to abandon home games due to an unsafe field, but the next two games are scheduled road affairs. The Tenacious Tigers travel to Tuscaloosa County this week and try to stop a five-game losing skid to the opponent.
Calvin Jenkins
6-1, 180 pounds
Senior quarterback
Auburn High School
Calvin Jenkins, the
South Alabama
commitment, lifts everyone around him and last Friday was no exception. The Tigers won the 6A-region 3 title over Central Phenix City 26-12.
The top-ranked Auburn travels this week to play their biggest rival, Opelika High School. The rivalry dates back to 1925, and the Bulldogs hold a slim lead in the series 41-37-3.
Justin Shade
5-9, 220 pounds
Senior linebacker
Briarwood Christian School
Shade had 16 tackles in the 24-7 5A-region 4 game over Sylacauga. The win clinched the championship for the Lions.
Briarwood Christian (6-2; 6-0) travels to 6A Florence this week in what projects as a great match-up.
Drew Phillips
6-0, 185 pounds
Senior running back
Boaz High School
The
BYU
commitment rushed for 188 yards on 36 carries scoring three touchdowns in the Pirates' 34-28 overtime win over Arab. Phillips scored touchdowns in two of the three overtimes.
Boaz (6-2; 5-1) will travel to face an much improved Etowah team this week to determine their 5A playoff position.
Graham Craig
5-10, 185 pounds
Senior quarterback
Spain Park High School
Craig passed for 229 yards in his team's 49-7 win over Gardendale breaking a two-game losing streak. The senior completed 11-of-15 passing attempts with five touchdown strikes. Spain Park (6-2; 5-2) hosts Oak Mountain this week in their last region game.
M.L. Shipman
6-0, 185 pounds
Senior running back/defensive back
Montgomery Catholic School
Shipman rushed for 161 yards, and picked off two passes and made 11 tackles in the 19-13 upset win over St. James.
Catholic High School (2-6; 2-4) will host Opp this week.
Justin Evans
5-10, 175 pounds
Senior quarterback
Midfield High School
Evans led the Patriots to a 30-10 win over Oak Grove completing 13-of-27 pass attempts for 244 yards and touchdowns of 15 and 59 yards before connecting twice on 22-yard scores in the fourth quarter.
The 4A-region 5 champ, Midfield (8-0; 6-0), takes their unblemished record on the road this week to face Haleyville.
Taylor Stephens
5-11, 200 pounds
Senior linebacker
Hewitt-Trussville High School
Stephens had 11 tackles in another overtime game last week. The Huskies defeated Gadsden City 17-14 after Stephens blocked a field goal attempt.
Hewitt-Trussville (6-2; 4-2) travels this week to take on Huffman.
