Drew Phillips is a 6-foot, 185-pound running back/defensive back prospect from Boaz, Alabama. With him being from Alabama, one wouldn’t expect him to get much attention out west. However, that certainly hasn’t been the case, as both BYU and Wyoming have shown a lot of interest and extended scholarship offers.
Phillips took the opportunity this past weekend to visit both BYU and Wyoming to further determine how the programs compared with one another as he hones in on his final decision. So which school came out on top?
“BYU is my favorite school right now, followed by SMU and then Wyoming," reported Phillips. “I still like all three, but after visiting each school I’d say BYU is my top school right now.”
Phillips started out his trip Thursday night in Provo as he attended and participated in the workouts BYU held at Junior Day. For Phillips, it was a chance to strut his stuff while being tutored on ways to improve his game.
“I worked out with Coach Reynolds and I really liked him," said Phillips. “He taught me some good stuff and it was great to go out there and catch some passes from my buddy Jake Heaps. The competition was really good and I had a lot of fun.”
Phillips then took the opportunity to tour the facilities and the school while learning more about BYU’s program.
“The facilities at BYU are great, the best I’ve seen," observed Phillips. “BYU is really nice and I loved the coaches. The coaches are probably the biggest reason they’re my favorite right now.”
Phillips also is attracted by the prospects of playing with some of the top talent nationally with such players as Jake Heaps, Ross Apo, Zac Stout and others.
“I talked a lot with all three of those guys and yeah, it would be great to play with all those guys," said Phillips. “I met with Jake and he gave a speech about how BYU was going to bust the BCS while he was there, and I was really impressed with that. He’s determined to bring BYU to the point where they compete for national championships and that would be great for me to be a part of that.”
Phillips then left Provo for Laramie, where he took the opportunity to check out Wyoming’s program and campus in depth.
“It was great meeting Wyoming’s coaches and they’re the main reason why I like Wyoming," said Phillips. “They have a nice campus and all. It was a good visit.”
Phillips wasn’t able to work out at Wyoming due to some minor injuries, but did enjoy his visit nevertheless and will definitely consider them throughout the recruiting process. So when does Phillips plan on making his final decision on where to sign?
“I don’t know when I’ll commit," answered Phillips. “I’m tripping up to Michigan this next week and we’ll see what they have to offer. I really like BYU, but we’ll just see how it goes. I could decide this next month or wait until the end, I really don’t know right now.”
