“I’m really excited to go out there to BYU and then to Wyoming," expressed Drew Phillips. “I’ve heard a lot from both schools and I’m excited to see both programs up close and meet the coaching staffs and all that.”
Drew Phillips is a 6-foot, 185-pound running back/defensive back prospect from Boaz, Alabama. He now holds offers from BYU, Wyoming, Stanford, Tennessee-Martin and Idaho, as well as SMU, which he recently visited on an unofficial trip.
“I really liked SMU," reported Phillips. “They’re a good school and I like their coaching staff. They’re a school who I’ll definitely consider in making my decision on who to commit to.”
Phillips plans on committing just prior to this coming football season. From now until then Phillips will be collecting offers while investigating the schools he holds offers from more and more. This process starts in earnest this week, as Phillips plans on arriving in Provo on Wednesday and staying there through Junior Day before visiting Wyoming on Saturday.
So does Phillips have a favorite school at this point?
“BYU is my favorite school right now," said Phillips. “The reason is that I really like their coaching staff. I’ve only met Coach Higgins, but I really like him. I like that he’s been down here to see me work out and I like what he’s told me about BYU.”
Phillips has yet to meet any of the other coaches on the BYU staff, but recently received a letter from Cougar head coach Bronco Mendenhall that really left an impression on him.
“It was hand-written and personalized, which I really liked," said Phillips about the letter sent to him from Mendenhall. “He told me in the letter how impressed he was of me and how anxious they were to have me up there visiting them. I can’t wait to meet him, he sounds like a great coach.”
Phillips has also been hearing from Wyoming assistants, primarily Coach Arroyo, whom he’s built a good report with through phone conversations and whatnot.
“I know their coaching staff is set to visit me down here and I’m excited about that," said Phillips. “I like Wyoming a lot and I’m anxious to see their school up close this coming weekend.”
