Despite being hobbled early in his senior campaign with a bad ankle, Shawn Southward had a pretty impressive year for Florence High School, rushing for over 1,400 yards. Southward says he’s a good blocker and receiver, and describes his 4.4 in the 40 running style as “downhill.” The versatile athlete also enjoys special teams and starred as the team’s kickoff returner.
Southward doesn’t know much about BYU at this point but he likes what he has heard from Coach Higgins. “I really haven’t had a chance to research the team that much, but from what he’s told me about the offense, they spread the ball out a little bit and they have fullbacks that block.” Southward hasn’t seen BYU on TV, but was thrilled to learn that the conference is affiliated with CBS and has its own television network.
Aside from an excellent football program, BYU has a unique religious environment with an honor code, but that doesn’t seem to bother the talented running back. “[Coach Higgins] also explained the university’s policies about no partying, no alcohol, and no sex.” Southward is active in his church and faithfully attends services every Sunday. He also says he’s on schedule to graduate this year and says he’s an “A and B student.”
Southward is impressed with BYU and likes how the team finished in the top 25 for the third straight year. “I think it’s great for the program,” he said. He will be talking with Coach Higgins soon to plan a visit out to BYU. Stay tuned to TBS for the latest developments of running back Shawn Southward.
