Murphy 100 Percent Committed to BYU

There were rumblings due to a Rivals report that Jake Murphy from American Fork was strongly considering signing with Colorado despite having previously committed to sign a letter of intent with BYU. TBS caught up with Murphy on Monday to clear up those rumblings and to know where the 6-foot-4-inch, 215-pound TE/LB recruit stands just a week and a half away from LOI Day.

“I’m 100 percent committed to BYU,” said Jake Murphy. “I committed to BYU and that’s the school I’ll sign with next week and the school I’ll attend after my mission.”

Murphy has received a strong push from Colorado and had an official trip scheduled with the Buffaloes this past weekend. Did Murphy end up taking that trip?

”It didn’t work out,” said Murphy. “I had some basketball stuff and I thought about it and decided that since I’m committed to BYU, there was no reason to go.”

Murphy will join with other local athletes in signing a letter of intent with BYU and will serve a mission before he enrolls. He will leave for his mission this coming July. As it turns out, Murphy shares the same exact birthday with another big-name recruit who will be inking his letter of intent with BYU on February 6.

“Austin Holt and I have the same exact birthday,” said Murphy. “We were actually roommates on our official trip to BYU and we talked about that and being in the MTC together. I know that Austin is still deciding [whether to serve a mission], but I’ll be there for sure this July.”

Murphy was hosted by linebacker David Nixon on his official trip and got along well with him. Murphy said he’s excited to become a Cougar after his planned church mission.

“The trip was great,” said Murphy. “I really enjoyed meeting all of my future teammates, snowmobiling, and everything else. I’m 100 percent committed to BYU and I’m excited to be part of BYU’s great program.”
