“Well, I’m 6-3 and 195 pounds,” Russell Carr said. “Last season I was named first team all-CIF at receiver and first team all-league (Mount Baldy League) at free safety.”
While at junior day, Carr did some drills for the coaches. He reported running a 4.58 and a 4.62 forty. He also had a 36-inch vertical leap. Once Carr got home to California on Monday, BYU called to offered him a scholarship. The Cougars were his second offer after UTEP.
“I’m happy BYU offered me.” Carr said. “They are a good school. Coach Higgins is the coach recruiting me. He is cool. He’s just a really good coach. The facilities were nice too.”
Carr said that both UTEP and BYU want him as a wide receiver. Carr’s participation in basketball and track, helped him to develop his hands and speed as a wide out.
When asked to describe his style of play on the football field Carr said he has a real nose for the ball. That is an unusual response for a receiver, but one that coaches certainly appreciate in big, tall athlete.
“I love going after the ball,” Carr said. “I just play real aggressive.”
While in Provo, Carr met Coach Mendenhall, who he said was a “cool coach.”
As far as making up his mind on a school, Carr said he wants to talk it over with his family and coaches.
“I’ll probably take my time deciding.” Carr said. “It will probably be after my senior season.”
Carr, who is not LDS, said that religion will not factor into his college choice.
TBS will catch up with Carr later this summer to see how his recruiting experience is proceeding.
