With two regular season games remaining in BYU’s 2004 rollercoaster season, true freshman wide receiver Austin Collie has emerged a legitimate freshman All-America candidate and a strong contender for the MWC Freshman of the Year Award.

Just a year ago, Collie was a high school All-American prep star at Oak Ridge High School in Northern California and was considered by college recruiting experts as the best LDS wide receiver prospect in at least 10 years.

They were wrong. The 6-1, 185-pound Austin Collie may be the best LDS receiver ever to make an immediate impact in the Div. 1 college ranks as a true freshman.

Collie is being talked about in the same breath as Iowa State's Todd Blythe, another true freshman receiver standout with 31 receptions for 666 yards and nine touchdowns.

After Saturday’s two-touchdown performance, Collie currently has 46 receptions for 614 yards and seven touchdowns. He is averaging 13.3 yards per catch and recorded his longest reception against San Diego State with an 82-yard touchdown bomb. On a per game basis, the freshman averages 68.2 yards per game this season.

In every game this season, Collie’s has recorded a minimum of three receptions per game, but his performance Saturday was his best yet with three passes for 95 yards and two touchdowns.

Through the San Diego State game, Collie boasts the following impressive stats:

America’s No. 1-ranked freshman:
• Receptions per game (5.11 receptions per game)

America’s No. 2-ranked freshman:
• Total receiving yards (614 yards)
• Receiving yards per game (68.2 yards per game)
