BYU’s No. 1 junior college defensive tackle recruit, who now lists the Cougars as his favorite, may not have enough transferable academic units to qualify for admission to the Provo school, TotalBlueSports.com has learned.

Vince Feula, the 6-1, 320 pound All-California JC All-American from Cerritos Junior College, told TBS yesterday he just learned that a number of credits earned when he attended the University of Arizona may not be transferable and could jeopardize his potential admission to BYU.

“Steve Kaufusi came by and said he has to check with the BYU counselors and get back to me. Everything is up in the air right now. I’m just waiting on them. BYU’s the place I really want to go now.”

Feula said other schools recruiting him do not have any problems accepting his credits. If BYU is out of the picture, Colorado State will be the frontrunner again, Feula said.

Meanwhile, Arizona has also re-entered the recruiting picture and is the only Pac-10 school he can play two years at. Feula started briefly as a redshirt freshman for the Wildcats. Academic challenges, however, sidetracked his Div. I career course and he enrolled at Cerritos Junior College last season, registering 85 tackles and seven sacks.

He did not take any recruiting visits this weekend. He was originally scheduled to take his official trip to Provo this weekend, but visited BYU unofficially instead last weekend.

“It was amazing. Probably the best I’ve seen. The locker room was huge. They said it was a replica of the Philadelphia Eagles locker room; it gave me the feeling of what it’s like at the next (professional) level.

“I also met with (defensive coordinator Bronco) Coach Mendenhall. He showed me some highlight film of the defense. I like the attitude of his defense. He’s the kind of coach everybody wants. No favoritism and the best players play. He seemed like a guy who knows what he’s talking about,” Feula added.

Other schools he had earlier listed in his top five included Utah, Fresno State and Hawaii.
