Former BYU quarterback Kevin Feterik started and played about three quarters of the Galgary Stampeders’ game last night against the Toronto Argonauts of the Canadian Football League (CFL).

His team, however, trailed 27-17 when he exited the game in the second half with a possible concussion.

Feterik put up some fairly impressive numbers before his injury, completing 16 of 24 passes for 150 yards with one touchdown and one interception. He looked very poised and consistent in several drives, but also had a few drives where he missed some open receivers. That led to some unseemly boos from some in the home town crowd who resent the fact his father owns the team.

Feterik escaped pressure well at times, but also took some hard shots from a defense determined to pressure the quarterback. The injury occurred when he was sandwiched between two defenders just after releasing the ball. He was helped to the sideline, but smiled and walked off the field under his own power.

Feterik was replaced by Scott Milanovich, who failed to move the ball with any consistency. The Stampeders lost the game 41-24. They fell to 2-4 on the season and last place in the West Division of the CFL.

Meanwhile, New York Jets free agent and former Cougar tight end Gabriel (Gabe) Reid has mostly recovered from a sprained ankle he suffered in the team’s second mini-camp.

Reid left Provo last Saturday (July 19) for an early pre-season training camp because the Jets will kick off the NFL pre-season in Tokyo, Japan next Saturday (August 2) against the Super Bowl champion Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Reid said he was doing really well in camp and was getting a lot of second team repetitions prior to the injury. It was still bothering him a little as he headed back to camp. He said his main concern is that although he can run on it, he still cannot cut with too much pressure on it yet.

Weeks prior to his departure, Reid was working out with BYU strength and conditioning coach Jay Omer. Other Cougars in the professional ranks working out with him in Provo included DE Ryan Denney, TE Chad Lewis, WR Reno Mahe, OT Ben Archibald and TE Doug Jolley.

Reid mentioned he just got a priesthood blessing prior to his departure. “I feel good about things with the team. I would feel a lot better if I hadn't hurt my ankle."

The numbers would also indicate that Reid is in a good position to make the team roster as a free agent. The Jets have released two other tight ends since mini camp began and only four tight ends remain.

The team normally keeps three tight ends on the roster, but they sometimes keep one more if they really like the fourth guy. Reid’s experience and effectiveness on special teams could also help him stick as the third or fourth TE.

EDITOR’S NOTE:

Ben Cahoon, TotalBlueSports.com Staff Editor, is performing yeoman double duty submitting stories even as he excels as a star receiver for the CFL’s Grey Cup (equivalent of Super Bowl) champion Montreal Alouettes.

Yesterday, Cahoon recorded six receptions for 117 yards and two touchdowns as the Alouettes beat the Winnipeg Blue Bombers 50-19. He scored both touchdowns in the second quarter on 66 and 21 yard pass plays from quarterback Anthony Calvillo.

Of course, TBS had to ferret out its own game stats since Cahoon does not write about himself.
