The Cougar coaching staff has identified a player they feel can come in and make an impact on the defense for the 2013 season. Cornerback Davion Orphey of Santa Ana Junior College is currently preparing himself for his final year of junior college ball.
“Nothing really is going at this time,” Orphey said. “I’m just getting ready and getting myself back into football and getting ready for the season. I’m just looking forward to the season so I can go ahead and move on afterwards.”
At the current moment, Orphey is being heavily pursued by the Cougars of BYU.
“Yeah, BYU is still trying to get me out there,” he said. “I’m going to wait it out a bit longer though to make sure of my options. Right now it’s just day by day. I’m still mostly getting interest from BYU and Texas Tech right now. I know a lot of coaches are on breaks right now, but we’ll see how it all plays out down the road. I’m just going to wait it out a little.”
Orphey recently spoke to BYU’s defensive backs coach about possibly committing.
“I talked to him, Coach Nick Howell, last Sunday and he was giving me all the carrots,” said Orphey with a chuckle. “Coach Howell is a great guy and we were just talking about if I felt it was time to make a decision to commit. He was trying to get me to commit and said, ‘Let’s get this done. If you feel it’s time to commit, let’s just do it right now.’ We talked about it but I just told him that I’m going to just wait it out a little longer.”
Orphey wants to wait so he can get his parents on board with the Cougar program.
“Yeah, I just have to get my parents on the same page,” said Orphey. “They’re not as interested, so I have to get them on the same page. They live out here at Huntington Beach, and so the plan is get them out there during the season to catch a game or something like that.”
So, Orphey is planning on having his parents visit BYU with him, although no details are set yet.
“That’s kind of the plan, but we’ll see what happens,” Orphey said. “I’ve talked to my parents about what it was like there a few times. I’m not sure exactly when we’ll be heading on down. I have to check when my bye week is on our schedule. I’m not sure yet until I see our schedule. Coach Howell wants me to fly back out there. He just wants to know when the bye week is so he can set it all up for us to come out here. It’s in the works but we just got to get it all set up and stuff like that.”
Orphey plans on enrolling at his new school by winter semester so he can participate in the next spring camp.
“Yeah, I’m a midyear transfer so I’ll be done by December of this year,” he said. “That’s my last month of being in a junior college. I never redshirted so I’ll have three to play two years at the next level if I have to redshirt in college. It will help to kind of have [that redshirt] to help me get used to the next level if I need it.”
