Shaw looking to improve on season

Basketball is in full swing and many BYU recruits and commits are in the midst of competition. Eagle High School power forward Braiden Shaw, who committed to BYU last October, has represented well on the court. However, he feels his current level of play, although very good, can be something he can improve on by the time he shoots his last shot of the season.

This season has been a bit of a rollercoaster ride for the 6-foot-8-inch Braiden Shaw, who is considered one of the best high school prospects in the state of Idaho.

“Our season started out really well,” Shaw said. “We went undefeated for around six games, then we lost to the number one seed. Actually there were two teams tied for the number one seed and we lost to both of them.

“Then, after a rough stretch, we lost to Capital High School which, was the last-place seed in the district, and then Boise High School. So, it’s been a little bit of a rough stretch, but we’re looking to turn things around. After the last couple of practices we’ve had a new fire spread among the team, so hopefully this will lead us to having a new stretch of success.”

While the Eagles have struggled as of late, Shaw has done well personally.

“I’ve been playing well and have been averaging 16.2 points a game,” Shaw said. “I want it to be up around 20 or 25 point average per game, but I’m only at around 16 and averaging around a double-double with around 10 rebounds a game. I’m playing well but I’m not quite where I want to be, so there’s always improvement."

While nearly averaging a double-double per game isn’t too shabby, Shaw has his sights set on bigger numbers by the time he plays his last game as a junior.

“By the end of the season, I want to be at around 20 points per game with 12 rebounds for my average," he said. “That’s my goal by the end of the season. I want to increase my shot percentage and be one of – if not the best – player in the state by the time I’m done."

Shaw’s goals will be a nice benchmark to spring him into his senior season at Eagle High School next year.
