After suffering a torn ACL last summer, Beck returned to this year's spring camp and suffered another setback.
"In spring camp I came back after I hurt my knee last year," Beck said. "When I came back, I don't think my knee was ready at that time and I kept getting my hamstring pulled. Now I kind of banged up my knee again, so I think the only thing that's keeping me from going 100 percent is my confidence. If I had that part of my recovery, it would be a different story.
"What I have been doing is a lot more work with the trainers doing hamstring stuff so what I experienced over this past spring doesn't happen again. I'm just doing the extra stuff and spending a lot more time to physically get myself ready and to mentally get myself ready."
His most recent knee injury came about a week and a half into fall camp.
"I just took a helmet to it on the inside and got a contusion and tore my meniscus a little bit, but I got a couple shots and I'm going again out there now. I think right now the biggest part for me is getting over the psychological part of it, just because this is my third time trying to come back."
Although his knee is still a little dinged up – it was wrapped for Monday's practice – his primary concern, as he said, is mostly the mental side of the injury.
"When I go out I sort of think about it during drills," said Beck. "I kind of think about it, but it's not that big of a deal. Usually what happens is I'll think about it during warm-ups and when I'm doing drills, but when I get out on the field and the game gets going I don't think about it and just go as hard as I can.
"After being out all of last year and in the spring, I started off this fall camp going about the first week and a half. After I got dinged up, I was off for about a week. It's been tough but I'm getting myself back into the swing of things. It's just that we have so many good players that if you take even just a little time off, it takes more time to get back into the swing of things."
Having watched Beck run through drills last week, one would never know he was still on the mend. However, Beck would tell you differently.
"Well, right now it's been so long since I've played, so right now I'm trying to catch up for the feel and speed of the game," Beck said. "I'm trying to get back where to keep my eyes and get my reads back. I told myself today that all I was going to do was to go out there, run hard, run fast and hit people. The assignment part will come later."
Sometimes it's better to go all out and play hard while making mistakes than it is to playi reserved and cautiously. This is the approach Beck takes with him to the field.
"It's always better to make mistakes going full speed because you can always make up for it later," Beck said with a laugh. "I'm just giving it all I've got right now. If I'm going to make a mistake, I'm going to give it my all. In time I'll be able to clean all that stuff up."
As of now Beck has been in the Mike linebacker rotation. With nicks and dings occurring at that position throughout fall camp, determining an established depth chart has been difficult.
"Well, it's been really interesting and kind of hard because there's been so many injuries at linebacker," Beck said. "One day, you can come in as a third-string linebacker and then the next day you can be back with the second-team. It's really kind of crazy how things have worked out this fall camp and you really don't know where we are."
While catching up to those who haven't been out for a long stretch of time, Beck will do whatever he can to contribute. If he doesn't make it back into a starting linebacker rotation, he'll try and make a difference on special teams.
"Well, I just want to do whatever I can to contribute to the team this season," Beck said. "If that means playing linebacker or special teams and kickoffs, I'll do it. I just want to do all that I can to help the team and help my brothers out there."
So how long until Beck feels he's where he should be?
"Well, I don't think I'll ever be where I want to be," Beck said. "I'm never satisfied and I'm always trying to get better. Right now I'm looking at a timeframe where I'm back to where I'm comfortable being out on the field. I'm looking at that point being about two more weeks and then I should be adjusted to really just cut loose, fully know my assignments and be able to fully trust my knee."
