BYU taking a hard look at Dimick (Updated)

Hunter Dimick has been a camp standout so far this spring, and college programs have taken note. He recently received his first scholarship offer, and is hoping to attract even more attention as he looks to keep busy this coming summer.

Hunter Dimick is a 6-foot-4-inch, 250-pound defensive end prospect from Syracuse High School in northern Utah. He was a standout performer for his varsity team last year, leading the entire state in sacks while earning himself first-team all-state honors for the 5A prep class.

He’s parlayed that junior-year success in showing extremely well at a couple of camps.

“I was named as the lineman of the camp at the Las Vegas elite combine and was the camp MVP at a San Diego camp I attended,” he said. “I feel I did very well at the camps, and want to keep showing well and get the attention of schools.”

That mission of his is well on its way to being accomplished. Shortly after his camp performance in San Diego, the Aztec coaching staff came calling, granting him his first scholarship offer.

“That was incredible,” he said about the San Diego State offer. “It’s a great experience getting your first offer, and knowing that you’ll have a chance to play in college. It’s what I’ve always wanted.”

Dimick doesn't know much about San Diego State currently, but is very anxious to learn more.

"I definitely want to go down there and check out their campus and their facilities," he said. "I want to take close looks at every school that ends up offering me."

San Diego State isn’t alone in their interest, as Dimick has received a lot of attention from schools such as Nebraska, Oregon State, UCLA, Air Force, and BYU. BYU coaches have indicated to him that an offer may be coming his way shortly.

“I’m mainly being recruiting by Coach Howell,” he said. “Him and my dad are good friends and we talk a lot. I’ve also met with Coach Poppinga and with Coach Kaufusi, and they’re all great guys. BYU is a great program, and definitely one of my favorite schools right now.”

Dimick is not LDS, but is fine with BYU's honor code.

"I know all about it, the coaches make sure that I do," he said. "Living the honor code is no problem at all for me. I like that about BYU, I like how they promote a clean environment there."

There is no stated favorite school for Dimick, as he’s carefully weighing his options and is anxious to continue his standout performances on the summer camp circuit. His plans right now are to attend the Nike camp in Oregon and to spend at least one day at BYU’s padded camp.

“I don’t have a favorite school right now,” he said. “I like San Diego State a lot right now, and I love Coach Lewis, who is their defensive line coach. I like BYU, and I’m very excited to see Oregon State some more this summer. They’ve given me a lot of attention. We’ll just see how it all goes.”

Dimick has no specific timeline on when he'll make his commitment.

"I'll probably wait until after the season to commit," he said. "I want to go on all my trips and make the best decision. I just want to play it out my final year and then decide."
